Our Focus
We are poised to make history.
After years of stagnant progress in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, new advances have given patients and their families hope. In the last five years alone, nearly 30 new drugs are actively under clinical trial investigations. Innovators have begun to leverage technology and are developing new tools to monitor patients and their oxygen use remotely. Medical device companies are harnessing portability to expedite detection in lung disease or assess moisture exchange.
The progress we’re experiencing could not have occurred without the passion and dedication of researchers, physicians, philanthropy, and patient advocates. Change happened because we collaborated and learned from each other, shared our resources, and believed in a single focus.
Improving Time to Diagnosis
It can take an average of three to five years before patients with pulmonary fibrosis receive an accurate diagnosis. Missed diagnoses are common because healthcare professionals often do not have the knowledge or the necessary tools to make an accurate conclusion. For patients struggling with every breath, delays can lead to frustrations, anxieties, and fears. This is why Three Lakes Foundation continues to focus on supporting projects and programs designed to expedite the diagnosis process.
Accelerating New Therapies
In the US, it can take an average of 12-15 years before a new drug enters the market with an expense of more than $2.5 billion. Development costs, regulatory hurdles, and small trial participants are obstacles that slow the potential of new therapies to enter the market. To accelerate new therapies, Three Lakes Foundation continues to support basic, translational, and clinical research ensuring that high potential molecules will see the light of day. While we continue to focus on research, we also are constantly seeking innovative discoveries that are sustainable and cost-effective.
A Focus on a Shared Vision
Change happens because groups agree to collaborate and support a mission. Change happens because organizations stand up to become catalyst. Three Lakes Foundation is a catalyst, and our mission is to unite research, industries, philanthropy to improve time to diagnosis and accelerate new therapies.
As a catalyst for change, we are committed to:
- Encouraging the sharing of innovative ideas, infrastructure, and resources
- Engaging with patients, family members, and other advocacy communities to understand their needs
- Applying the advances in technology to merge and harmonize data and accelerate research and fund new therapies
- Collaborating with organizations that can influence policy change affecting access to care
We have made significant progress. But there is still more than we can do. Together. Pulmonary fibrosis doesn’t wait. And until our vision becomes a reality, Three Lakes Foundation will continue to fight for every breath.
